Making Articulated Paper Puppets
I love collecting toys. My boyfriend and I have amassed quite a few and display them above our bed on a shelf that runs around the room. I have often wanted to make my own toys and this is how I came up with the idea of making puppets which can be framed as art in shadow boxes. I decided to make traditinal puppets, in that they are hand drawn, but decided to take it a step further by utilizing my computer and printer. The first step is to take a large piece of paper. I use a strathmore drawing pad. I sketch out the puppet with pencil, leaving extra room for the moveable pieces. Then I use my trusty speedball pen with interchangeable nibs, depending on the quality and fineness of line I require, and ink in the whole thing. I have a great 10.1 mega-pixel camera and set it on the "macro" setting to take a picture of my puppet. After uploading the image on my computer and keeping it at full size so the image will remain crisp, I take it to adobe photoshop, where I color it in. I make a print of the results. Then I cut out all the pieces, connect the moveable parts with metal brads and I have a finished puppet. Several articulated puppets can be found in my shop http://rtisan2.etsy.com. I also have a photo tutorial about making puppets in my blog: http://rtisan.blogspot.com |
